Jabal Al Akhdhar is in the Dakhiliya Region of  the Sultanate of Oman and is the highest Mountain in the Arabian Penisula; It reaches a height of over 10,000 feet and is noted for its large Plateau at the 7000 ft. It is famous not only for its height but also for its pleasant climate and nature. A number of villages such as Saiq, Sharaija, Wadi bani Habib, Al Ayn, Al Aqar , Al Manakhar , Hayl Al Yaman, Al Qasha, Salut and Masirat Al Rawajeh are scattered here and there in the mountain.

The Jabal Al Akhdhar is gifted with a variety of fruit trees such as peaches, apricots, figs, grapes, apples, plums, almonds, walnuts and its pomegranate are classed as the best in the World. Safron is also grown on the Jabal. The scenery of its vegetation in general and the mountainside terraces in particular is unique and picturesque.

Because of the height of the Jabal and for safety reasons - a Four Wheel Drive vehicle is required for the visit of this tourist place. The road is open for public now and no more prior permission is required for travel.



Climate, Cultivation, Animals and Environment

The climate in the jabal is moderate and pleasant all year round. In the summer temperature does not exceed 30°C and in the winter it drops to minus 5°C, heating system and warm cloths are therefore necessary in winter. The Jabal Al Akhdhar gets average of 303 mm of rain a year, the average humidity in summar is about 25°C.

There are a number of animals and birds such as ibex, gazelles, wolves and the leopard which may be found in the remote areas. The  shepherds are proud of their Jabal goats and they are scattered all around the area.

Farming, waving and grazing are the inherited occupations but above all is the production of rose water using an ancient technique, handed down the ages. In the spring, during the extraction season, the wonderful fragrance can be smelt from long distances.

The environment is virgin and unspoilt. It is the only place where the ancient juniper tree grows widely - a picnic under one of those big old fragrance trees in a summer day is really unbelievable. Indigenous olives, comfrey, theme berberis and myrtle are widely grown and a number of medicinal plants and herbs that yet await scientific analysis.
